BACKGROUND:
He dedicated his life to science, to the betterment of mankind; that's what Doctor Otto Octavius would tell you. Growing up with an abusive father that would beat him and his mother it was his sole escape. He wasn't an athlete and he wasn't blessed with Adonis DNA; that led to a very solitary existence growing up but the likes of Einstein, Galileo, Newton, Tesla, and Darwin offered him the world at his very fingertips in the work the left behind. Through science he could find a way out of poverty and solve the crises afflicting the world; he could break the code to clean and responsible energy, he could cure illness if given enough time; the blind could see, the deaf could hear and the crippled would walk due to his brilliance. If given enough time; time was the only resource he could not control. Otto Octavius saw his mind as superior with everything boiled down to a puzzle to be solved.
During the waning days of the Cold War Otto Octavius, fresh off his Ph.D in nuclear physics lended his talents to the United States government, at one point even being invited to the White House to have dinner with Ronald Reagan and the world's top nuclear experts. He was a prodigy in the field and with a natural talent as a brilliant inventor he was seen as Uncle Sam's secret weapon in the event the Soviets went rogue and tried to hold the world hostage. The FBI referred to him by the code name Octopus and SHIELD agents were rumored to be entrenched in his security detail until the end of the Cold War.
After democracy was brought to Eastern Europe he accepted a position at ESU as a professor where he would meet his future wife, Rosalie. For a while life was good to the Doctor, he was Daily Bugal's Man of the Year in 1998 and 2000 and with his breakthrough invention of adamantium tentacles he was nominated for the Nobel Science Prize; a revolutionary multi-purpose apparatus that was designed to make the handling of nuclear materials both safer and more precise than ever. The apparatus was initially a runaway success, expanding beyond it's intended use to military manufacturing and advanced robotics but there was an unintended side-effect; a small number of people suffered seizures and symptoms mimicking radiation poisoning due to prolonged exposure to the adamantium. Doctor Otto Octavius brushed it off as nothing more than a long con game or gross misuse, having personally tested it on himself and felt no ill side-effects; indeed those who did come down ill were found to have had previous pre-existing ailments but his once pristine reputation had it's first black mark.
In 2010 at the Empire State Science and Technology Expo Doctor Octavius unveiled the latest and greatest model yet, the Octavius Mark V. This cutting edge design improved upon the previous 4 models and with a partnership secured with Oscorp he finally was able to use what seemed to be an infinite well of resources to create the Superior[/b\ Design. With spinal integration true telepathic control was achieved for the first time in human history over mechanical, inorganic parts and compounds and as such even allowed the user to feel painless sensations to such a design that a surgeon could, in theory, be able to perform delicate surgery with these extra 'hands'. Not everyone was pleased though, a very rabid section of journalism and social media warned of such delicate technology falling into the wrong hands and that such a creation could easily be abused or cause unforeseen complications. Doctor Octavius however appeared to win the day when ESU was awarded a new grant for their technology department and having been recognized by Silicon Valley for his contributions to technological progress it appeared that he had the final laugh
But all of that changed in 2014, when in a freak accident working on a top secret government nuclear project triggered miniature meltdown. Having been the top overseer of the project he wasn't immune to the ramifications, the explosion causing the adamantium of his apparatus to fuse into his spine as he suffered excruciating pain. Amazingly he survived the incident but 4 assistants and 1 security office lost their lives that day. The government was quick to cover up the incident and the civil war in Syria became a convenient smokescreen to bury it under the headlines. The rehab was long and painful but 4 months later he would be discharged from a military medical facility but not before receiving a diagnosis that would change his life forever – he had cancer. Advanced cancer, Stage III bordering on Stage IV.
Impossible. So absorbed in his work he never once thought anything that serious could be wrong with his health; even more so was the fact that radiation was completely ruled out as the cause. In fact his radiation count was low, despite working with radioactive material and his tentacles didn't even register a trace of radiation. But of course Doctor Octavius would get to the bottom of this himself; even though the field he was most known in was nuclear physics he had a very strong biochemistry background as well and it would take a Superior Mind to get to the bottom of this.
He turned inwards to himself, he shut out the outside world, even his loving wife Rosie in search of a diagnosis and a cure. In seclusion he ran test after test, quickly running out of time; his time was nearly up and yet he had so much more to accomplish! The fact that he would've died as an icon who gave as much to science during his generation wasn't enough, not when he wasn't the undisputed greatest mind to have ever lived. Not when so many had yet to truly witness and accept his brilliance. It wasn't enough.
Then it dawned on him; could the compound fused to his spine be accelerating some metallic toxicity he hadn't accounted for? He didn't think for a second that the small but serious cases a decade ago had any merit; they were mere amateurs and to his knowledge he was the first case. And his research would prove just that... except for one highly classified memo – The Weapon X Project. A rogue government experiment to make a super soldier, fusing adamantium to the skeleton being one of many trials conducted. Those who didn't die immediately from the procedure would find their last days painfully short and without comfort, acute toxicity was the number one cause of death. Outside of one known survivor anyway. Now that he knew what he was up against it was time to fight it with everything he had.
While he hadn't found a cure he did conduct various experimental measures, using himself as the test subject in a calculated manner. His disease slowed to a crawl, advancing at a much slower rate but still inching toward the final finish line nonetheless as he gave himself years instead of months to live. Each precious day was a small victory earned and each day gained to his depleting lifespan kept a ray of hope alive. He knew he was approaching a breakthrough but his funds were beginning to dwindle, despite all the patents, the money and royalties to his name it still wasn't enough to offset his costly medical self-treatment. He had to get more money; he had secure capital. Thus Doctor Octopus was born.
He planned his illicit activity conveniently when Spider-Man's hands were too full, hitting banks when the web-slinger had bigger fish to fry. The Goblin, The Rhino, The Shocker, they all proved to be a very effective allies, none the wiser that he was being opportunistic with their various criminal activities. Outside of Norman Osborn, who was accused of killing someone he had never met any of these rogues personally but he would always tip his hat out of acknowledgment when he heard sirens rushing 10 blocks away; stretched too thin to deal with some bank robber when a serious crisis was unfolding. He always knew where to be and with his advanced stage of cancer nobody seemed to recognize the brilliant scientist with a now bald head and a sharp pair of sunglasses concealing his unmistakable gaze.
He struggled with what he was doing; reducing himself to a common burglar but to this was the only way forward; the only way he could save his own life. With each evil act the voice in his head telling him this is wrong gets a little quieter, a little quieter, a little quieter as he flirts with the point of no return; the day he would have to commit an unforgivable act to finally reach a cure. But another voice in him was getting louder, louder and louder, a voice that refused to let this Superior Mind perish before he was ready to walk away. Time is ticking; it's time to explore desperate measures; no matter the cost.
